  We knew that kindle is for amazon, epub is for ipad.

Recently I heard about that they can change to each other, that's a good news.

But the fact is no.

Well, the new Kindle format that we discovered yesterday is a pretty good sign that Epub just isn't going to happen.

  Amazon just released Kindle print replica (KPR), and it has a lot of details in common with a PDF. KPR is a fixed layout ebook format like PDF and it even uses a similar tool bar.

Here's the thing. Amazon didn't adopt PDF. They could have used PDFs if they wanted to, but instead they went with their own proprietary format. They went with something that was like PDF but  that they could control completely.

This new format should tell you a lot about Amazon. They value control over usability. It should also tell you that Amazon's future plans probably won't include any open formats.

If Amazon ever do adopt Epub, I'd bet that they will call it something else. I also suspect that Amazon Epub format will not be wrapped in a Zip file (like the Epub standard requires). Breaking with the open standard is how they control their platform.

After the wildly successful launch of Firefox 4 not all that long ago, it's hard to believe the next iteration of Mozilla's popular and free open source browser is already here. Mozilla today delivered the final version of Firefox 5, the first edition under the new faster-release regime it kicked off earlier this year.

The company also patched 10 bugs in Firefox 5, including one in the browser's handling of the WebGL 3-D rendering standard that rival Microsoft has called unsafe.

Shortly after Mozilla launched Firefox 4 in March, the company committed to a faster release schedule that puts the browser on a six-week refresh cycle that lets developers add features as they're completed, rather than hold them until all work on the next upgrade is completed. If a feature presents problems, it's yanked and re-inserted into a later cycle after fixes have been applied. Mozilla has denied copying Google Chrome's upbeat schedule -- that browser was the first to institute a fast- release strategy -- but analysts have noted the similarities and pointed out the need of all browser makers to step up the pace.

Firefox 5's user interface is nearly identical to Firefox 4, for instance.Mozilla also dropped a feature it had touted during the testing phase, dumping a tool that let users change development channels from, say, the final to either Beta or Aurora, rougher builds that precede the most stable  edition. The company decided that few were using the channel switcher, and rather than devote time and resources to maintaining the feature, pulled it.

Mozilla's Do Not Track feature gives users more control over the way their browsing behavior is tracked and used on the Web by allowing them to tell the websites they visit that they want to opt out of online behavioral tracking. Did you know that you can stream movies from your PC to the iPad, use it as a secondary monitor, connect USB speakers and keyboards, and browse Web sites with actual tabs? Here's how to get the most from Apple's iPad. The iPad is loaded with all kinds of features you've probably heard about, but look a little deeper, and its extra abilities might surprise you. Some of these secrets are enabled through apps, while some are built into the device already.

Connect More Than a Camera

Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit does so much more than its stated purpose. Instead of just transferring photos and videos from your camera or SD card, the adapter's USB port attaches a range of devices. Many USB keyboards work. The iPad presents a warning that the device isn't supported (shown left), but if it doesn't draw much power, you can ignore the message. Volume and media keys usually work, and you can even use desktop commands such as Command-Z. (Don't forget that the iPad also officially supports Bluetooth keyboards and Apple's iPad Keyboard Dock). USB audio devices can work, too--including speakers, headsets, and microphones. If a device draws too much power and balks (as when I connected a Zoom H2 mic and Logitech V20 PC speakers), no problem: just attach the device to a powered USB hub, and connect the hub to the Camera Connection Kit adapter. You can even attach different devices-such as a keyboard and speaker set-at the same time.

Jailbreak for More Features

Apple maintains obsessive control over the iPad, making it less like a computer and more like a media player. But you have an alternative: Jailbreak the iPad, and you can run third-party apps that weren't approved by Apple.

If you're willing to jailbreak your iPad (which means voiding your iPad warranty and taking full responsibility for anything that may go wrong), then you can also use the Camera Connection Kit to read USB sticks and SD card directories. (Without jailbreaking, you can already import SD-card videos and photos or attach a Compact Flash reader). With a bit more fiddling, you can read files from an external USB hard drive. Those are a lot of unnecessary hoops to jump through for such basic connectivity, but it is at least possible. Again, jailbreaking is best left for the tech-oriented or the adventurous.

You would connect the iPad to a computer, run Sprit and then be able to install apps through the Cydia interface. Cydia and iTunes apps coexist, so you can install apps like Backgrounder and Multiflow to enable multitasking (letting you listen to Pandora while working in other iTunes-purchased apps, say). Of course, multitasking is coming officially in OS 4.0. Notes: ProSwitcher (arguably the best jailbreak multitasking app for the iPhone) didn't appear to be optimized for the iPad (yet) at the time of writing. For jailbreak apps, sticking to those that have been reworked for the iPad will help avoid--though not guarantee against--unnecessary hassle.

Other jailbreak apps include iPad-ready versions of Wi-Fi Sync (wireless iTunes syncing), Winterboard (customized themes), and Dashboard (OS X-style widgets). You can also use your iPad with a mouse, run game console emulators and hand controllers, and otherwise do things Apple doesn't allow. Benefits will grow as the iPad jailbreaking community expands.

Turn Your iPad into a Secondary Desktop Display

With its big, high-resolution display, it's a shame to just park an iPad when switching to a computer. Instead, Air Display ($10) makes your iPad a second screen for your Mac, extending the desktop. The tool has just been submitted to the App Store and should be released soon; I checked out a beta.

Overall, Inkpad is a brilliantly executed iPad app and a mouth-watering prospect for any vector artist.

ArtStudio: Lucky Clan's ArtStudio for iPad brings some of the best features from across a range of painting apps into one place and is probably the most desktop-like app that I have used on the iPad. It has a broad array of brushes including an airbrush, wet brush, and a useful scatter brush for creating patterns and textures. There are hidden panels of options for brushes, colors, and layers that give you extra choices, when needed.A great feature of ArtStudio is its filter panel for making stylized adjustments to your painting, such as Gaussian blur, sharpen, noise, and colorize. Unfortunately, the user interface suffers because of the number of tools available. Despite that, I found ArtStudio a quick app to navigate and easy to get used to working with.

If you are new to iPad finger painting or digital painting in general, Brushes and Procreate are by far the easiest apps to learn. They both have really clean interfaces and don't overly complicate the process with too many settings. ArtStudio or SketchBook Pro may be better choices for more experienced users who are looking for an app with the same amount of options as a desktop package, while ArtRage is the obvious choice for artists looking to achieve a natural quality in their work.

There is no perfect iPad art app. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses-I often work with several different apps to complete a single piece of artwork. I consider Brushes to be my main iPad art app because it offers a good balance of features and usability with the option to playback and export your steps later. For me, that is a killer feature.
