The Good

1. It's a great e-reader

Throw away your old netbook. This is the new hotness. Don't worry about the keyboard. It works fine as long as you have a box of baby wipes handy to clean the screen.

 

4. It's a great couch-surfing device

Picture this: you're watching TV. The iPad is on your coffee table. Don't pick it up or you won't be able to put it down. While we really shouldn't be spreading our attention so thin, do you really need to dedicated every single one of your neurons to Modern Family? It's a good show, but there's Twitterin' to be done!

 

5. The 3G model is probably your best bet

This kind of doesn't fit in this list, but if you're up in the air I think the 3G model is the best. While you can turn off the 3G, you're going to want to use it on the road and, barring the chance of download of 800MB of data and getting a $18,000 bill, you'll find it very useful.

 

6. It's excellent for movies

If there's any reason to get Apple's iPad stand - or the Joule iPad stand for that matter - it's so you can watch Netflix and movies on it. The Bad

1. It's not much of a work machine.

New applications may hammer away at the iPad's limitations, but the truth is that a notebook or netbook or even (in many circumstances) an iPhone is much more useful. Maybe it isn't even fair to ask a device so well-tuned for entertainment to work at the office too, but Apple is promoting the iPad as a work tool. And right now, I have to respond, "No" in most circumstances.

 

2. The wrong screen.

It's not clear why Apple didn't choose a 16:9 aspect ratio, the standard for widescreen entertainment, but not doing so makes the iPad much less interesting for watching movies though we have complete the ipad conversion by a video to ipad converter . Widescreen everything is today's video consumption standard. But iPad's aspect ratio takes you back to the last decade. My smartphone not only displays video in 16:9 ratio, it shoots photos that way, too.

 

3. There's no camera.

Camera is one of the greatest utilities on most portable devices, whether cell phones, laptops or even netbooks. 4. It's not a good bedside email companion.

For some reason I still use my iPhone or Blackberry to check email when I wake up. The fact that I'm reading email when I wake up is a different problem entirely. I should take up smoking.

 

5. It's not the best device for writing longer documents

I really tried to edit a huge document using Pages and other editors but it just didn't work. Pages is still too nascent to work well for folks who want to write the Great Armenian Novel.

 

6. It's no Kindle/Nook

The iPad sucks in sunlight. There's no two ways about it. If you plan to read your ebooks out on the veranda with a mint julep, you'd better get a tent.

 

7. Not easily graspable.

This limits use to sitting on a couch, as opposed to moving around. I'd be afraid it would slip from my fingers and crash to the floor. I would have liked an industrial design with handles, a place for a strap, a protective cover, etc. However, I think the after-market vendors will likely fill in these gaps.

 

8. Lack of Flash support. On the iPhone, this was a minor transgression (at least in the initial release). In the case of the iPad, the omission is starting to get ugly, because the past excuses (veiled allusions to performance or battery life) do not hold water when there are 100,000 apps written by semi-skilled programmers available on the AppStore.
