The general introduction of 'Hotel Rwanda'
Hotel Rwanda is a 2004 American drama film directed by Terry
George. It was adapted from a screenplay written by both George and
Keir Pearson. Based on real life events in 1994 Rwanda, the film
stars Don Cheadle as hotelier Paul Rusesabagina, who attempts to
save his fellow citizens from the ravages of the Rwandan Genocide.
Veteran actors Joaquin Phoenix, Nick Nolte and Jean Reno also star
in principal roles. The film, which has been called an African
Schindler's List, documents Rusesabagina's acts to save the lives
of his family and more than a thousand other refugees, by granting
them shelter in the besieged Hôtel des Mille Collines. Hotel
Rwanda explores genocide, political corruption, and the
repercussions of violence.
Based upon the 1994 Rwandan conflict, Paul, a hotel manager
who knows the benefits of keeping his friends close and his enemies
even closer, is forced to fight for the lives of his family as well
as countless refugees as a Rwandan dictator assassinates the
Rwandan President overthrowing a peace agreement, leading to the
massacring of over a million Tutsi civilians.
The film was a co-production between the motion picture
studios of United Artists and Lions Gate Films. It was commercially
distributed by United Artists theatrically, and by MGM Home
Entertainment for home media. As an independent film, it had an
initial limited release in theaters, but was nominated for multiple
awards, including Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, Best
Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay. The film also won
a number of awards including those from the Berlin and Toronto
International Film Festivals. It features songs written by several
recording artists including Wyclef Jean and Deborah Cox. The film
score was composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams, Andrea Guerra and
the Afro Celt Sound System.Hotel Rwanda is an important and
carefully crafted film well worth seeing. Set in Kigali, the
capital city of Rwanda, during the genocide of April and May 1994
Hotel Rwanda is a sensitively made film.
BLU-RAY REVIEW
Video: 2.35:1 Widescreen in 1080p HD with AVC codec.
This flick was well shot and looked very real, a little too real at
times.
Audio: 5.1 DTS-HD in English, French and Spanish with the
same subtitle options. The score was up and down but sure did
build some mean tension.
Commentary (2:01:51): Director Terry George, the real Paul
Rusesabagina with some select input from musician Wyclef Jean give
an exceptional commentary mainly due to the fact that Paul was
there and knows exactly how everything went down. Don Cheadle
also weighs in for a select few scenes.
