4:19 AM - Top 10 iPad 2 Tips

Your new iPad 2 might not be as full-featured (or as complicated) as a laptop or desktop PC, but a few neat tricks are still hidden between the surface. Read on to learn how to secure your iPad, sync your bookmarks, and more.

1.Make your passcode more complicated: iOS defaults to a four-number passcode, but you can turn it off by going to Settings, General, Passcode Lock, Simple Passcode. Now you can use any full keyboard password to lock the iPad. The password also helps to encrypt your mail and attachments on the iPad, so you probably want to make it safer than a four-digit number.

2.Sync your bookmarks: You can use iTunes to sync your iPad's Safari bookmarks with your PC's Web browser. Open the iPad tab in iTunes, click the Info tab, scroll down to the Other heading, check Sync bookmarks with, and choose your preferred browser.

3.Know your Web links: You can check a linked word's actual destination URL by touching and holding down on the link--it's a perfect way to sniff out phishy links.

4.Choose an app for e-mail attachments: You can open a file attached to an e-mail message by tapping the attachment in Mail, but if the default app isn't the one you want to use, you can press and hold and wait for a menu that lets you select an app.

5.Use the iPad as a picture frame: Not for physical photographs, silly. You can press the Picture icon in the lower-right corner of the Lock screen to have the iPad display its available photos.

6.Share podcasts with friends: Listening to a podcast that you think a friend would like? You can share the link while you're listening to it by pressing the Email button while it's open.

7.Don't forget your downloads: You can immediately see if your iTunes account is due for any incoming downloads by opening iTunes on your PC, clicking the Store menu, and selecting Check for available downloads. This trick can come in handy if your download process is interrupted, or if you missed some bonus iTunes content that came with an album you purchased.

8.Forget Wi-Fi networks: So you accidentally connected to a network once, and your iPad remembers it for life--whether you like it or not. On your iPad, go to Settings, Wi-Fi, and find the network under the 'Choose a Network' heading. Tap the blue arrow next to the network you want to remove, and tap the button on the top that says Forget this Network.

9.Change your e-mail signature: Don't be one of those people who leave the default 'Sent from my iPad' signature on all their messages. Change it in Settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Signature to...well, anything but that.

10.Use the Side Switch: You can use that neat switch on the side either to enable and disable audio alerts (this doesn't affect video/audio playback) or to lock the screen's orientation in portrait or landscape mode. You can toggle which function is assigned to the side switch by opening Settings from the Home screen, selecting General, and choosing the function you want under the 'Use Side Switch to' heading.

2:03 AM - iPad 2 & Obama

A recent bit of photography from the White House's Flickr account released a fact that most of us probably weren't aware of-Barack Obama favors the iPad 2 as a computing platform.

The most powerful man in the world is already well-known for his love of technology, and his affection for RIM's Blackberry. However, when it comes to tablet computers Obama is definitely on-board, but his hardware of choice carries an Apple badge.

An image of Obama walking to Marine One after a town hall meeting in Fairless Hills, Pa from earlier this month, clearly shows an iPad under his arm. More specifically it is an iPad 2 with grey Smart Cover attached.

One of Obama's complaints about the Blackberry after he became president was that security meant it was pretty much locked down. With an iPad 2 he should have a lot more freedom due to all the apps he can download.

While we are sure he uses it to view official documents and make notes, there's bound to be a few games on there that even if he doesn't play his daughters do. One question we'd like to ask him is if he uses it to search the web, and if he does, is the lack of Flash support a pain or a pleasure? There is also the matter of whether he has played Angry Birds or not? He must have, right?

2:48 AM - iPad 2 vs. Android Tablets

Last year was iPad's reign where Apple managed to create a market for tablet pcs out of nowhere and dominate it with the iPad. Will this domination change in 2011? Are Android 3.0 tablets ready to get the crown from Apple? We believe that it's too early to answer these questions securely.

To begin with, we have not yet seen an android 3.0 tablet in the market, what we have seen so far is videos demonstrating the features of Honeycomb and nothing else. Yes, both Honeycomb and some of the tables look great and promising but it's really too early to tell if the consumers will forget their first love and move to android for their tablet PC needs.

On the other hand, Apple managed to keep their cards hidden and we do not know how many aces they have on their sleeve for the next version of IPad. During the days of CES 2011 they kept quiet leaving Android fans enjoy their 5 days of glory.

So, where does the tablet market heading, to Apple or Google? The only way to predict the future of the tablet market is to base our assumptions on facts:

1.One Device VS a lot of devices

The ipad is only one device while Android 3.0 will run on a number of devices from trusted hardware manufacturers such as Motorola, Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and many more. This fact alone creates an advantage for Android 3.0 which can satisfy the taste of a wide variety of users both in hardware specs (7 inch - 10 inch) but also price.

2.Tablet Software

The Apple app store has 300,000+ applications ready to run on the iPad while the android market is still behind especially when we talk about applications for Android 3.0 tablets. The majority of the android market apps are for phones only and it will take some time for developers to optimize their applications for android 3.0 and tablet usage. During that period is the time that Apple has to go a step further otherwise the android market will catch up and once it does it will be too late for Apple to make a move.

3.Market domination

Recent history suggests that no company owns a market. If we go a year or so backwards we will find the iPhone dominating the smartphone market and Android scoring less than 10% share. One year later Android stole the pole position from Apple and there is still room for expanding this further.

4.Customer loyalty

Apple has loyal customers. It is a fact that everything that Apple produces sells millions from the first days and the majority of Apple users do not betray Apple for other products. Nobody though can be certain that this will continue for tablets. Google seems to be very serious about the future of Android and when the big search giant wants something it has all the means and resources to get it.

5:10 AM - How to Rip Dvds with VLC?

Like everybody I get stressed out because of my inability to play movies I purchased as a DVD on portable media players, computers without DVD drives, etc. I'm an open source nut so I don't want to pay for $50 software that doesn't work that great. Luckily I found out how to rip DVDs to many popular formats using my favorite media player, VLC, and I'm here to show you how.

1.Load up the DVD you want to rip and start up VLC.  Then under Media click on Convert / Save.

2.The Open Media window will appear and you want to click on the Disc tab.  Check DVD, make sure the disc device field points to the optical drive with the dvd, and hit Convert/Save.  You can select the start position by selecting the title and only record a specific chapter on the DVD.  You can also skip the DVD Menus as you will not be able to use them in the ripped file.

3.Next the Convert screen opens where you will want to select a location for the ripped file.

4.While you are browsing to the location to put the ripped file make sure to give it a name and a supported extension.  For this example we ripped Lord of the Rings and gave it a MOV extension.  If you don't label it with a supported file extension it will default to .ps (Program Stream) file.

5.When everything is set up the Convert screen will look something like this where we have the source drive and destination file with appropriate extension.

6.While the DVD is being ripped you will see a progress count in the main UI.  The amount of time it takes will depend on the file format and size of the DVD but it will take a while no matter what.

7.You should be able to play the converted file with other media players assuming you have the right codec.  Of course will notice the conversion results in lower quality compared to the original.

3:26 AM - iPad 2 And Future of Tablets

You can't browse the tech section of Google News for more than a few minutes without coming upon an article about some new tablet. Whether it runs on Android, Windows 7, webOS or iOS, it has a legion of dedicated fans jumping at the bit any leaked news, no matter how petty. When you look at all the hype surrounding a product like the iPad 2, it is easy to forget how young tablets are as a device category.

Which is why the success- or failure, of the iPad 2 is so crucial for this emerging market. Analysts already expect tablets to be a 35 billion dollar market by 2012. A third of those sales are expected to cannibalize from sales of netbooks and notebooks.

Are tablets destined for the same road?

The best answer to this question is...maybe. Tablets have a few things going for them. For one, they're much more focused devices. A tablet won't do all the things a netbook can do, but it does what it does quickly and efficiently. Mobile operating systems draw less power and accomplish a limited set of tasks with more speed.

Your iPad won't run Photoshop, but it'll boot up and have you in your email while your desktop is still powering on.

But on the other hand, tablets still represent a compromise. Power for convenience. Ease of transport for ease-of-typing. Full HD video for more comfortable, 720p video. So far, consumers seem eager to make those compromises. But the night is young.

How the iPad 2 Can Keep the Pressure Up:

The continued momentum of the tablet market will hang entirely upon the iPad 2. Apple has a few things they must deliver on.

1. Multimedia: The iPad 2 must be able to handle 1080p video with no starts, stutters or jitters. The Xoom is more than capable of this, so I don't anticipate the iPad 2 falling short. But the iPad 2 will also need to deliver superior connectivity- either through Verizon's 3G network or, ideally, LTE. Streaming media is a key part of the tablet's attraction.

2. Cost. The Xoom may have made a major miscalculation here. Tablets are much less attractive when they compare in cost to a high-end laptop. If the iPad 2 wants to maintain its momentum, that $499 price-point is utterly critical.

3. Longevity. Laptops don't get long battery life unless you spend a lot of money, or go for something like a netbook with vastly reduced functionality. The iPad's 10 hour battery was a big part of its 'wow' factor. Expect the iPad 2 to improve on this.
