The Crows wish to sign Ben Dowdell, a 23-year-old from NSW who has spent the past four years playing basketball for Santa Clara within the NCAA division 1. Dowdell, the younger brother of NBL player Jeff Dowdell, impressed Crows officials during current testing in spite of minimum AFL expertise. Adelaide has asked approval for Dowdell's inclusion on their rookie list beneath the AFL's alternative talent rule. The rule permits for players who have not been registered with any football club in the previous three years to become signed with out going via the draft system. The Crows want the 201cm tall Dowdell as a project player for next season, the club's football operations manager Phil Harper stated. Ben's manager ... has alerted us to quite a few basketballers who've contemplated turning their hand to football, Harper stated inside a statement on Wednesday. To date we haven't committed to any, but after a couple of sessions with our club's development coaches Ben impressed sufficient for us to commit to him for season 2012. ...
